Perspective watch

I saw family of four on a vespa; father was driving, one kid standing on the floor holding his legs, mother was on the seat behind, holding the father around his waist with one hand, holding an infant in her lap in the other. I henceforth have no sympathy for people who say they "need" an SUV.

This one ranks right up there among your "perspective watch" posts. It struck a chord because (a) we Indians tend to be pretty much oblivious to such instances and (b) when my Dad bought his first scooter (the ubiquitous Bajaj) this is precisely how we - a family of 5 - traveled!! My sister and me perched right in front of Dad's seat with our noses just about reaching the speedometer and mom doing a great balancing act holding my kid brother with one hand and holding on to the handle bar between the pillion and rider seats!
The fact that cities like Bangalore see close to 700 cars getting registered every day is not indicative of the omnipresent two wheeler fraternity across the country doing badly. Case in point Bajaj Auto (one of the largest selling two wheeler companies in India) has announced the launch of 8 new products in an Auto Expo in Jan 2006!
May the tribe grow! We could do with less cars on the narrow roads in any case.
